What Is Personal Color Analysis?
How the 16-season system works, what happens in a session, and how to get the most from it.
Color Analysis in Plain Language
Personal color analysis identifies which colors harmonize with your natural skin, hair, and eye coloring. Instead of guessing which shades flatter you, an analyst compares colors against your face and builds a palette you can use for clothing, makeup, hair color, jewelry, and accessories.
A well-matched color makes skin look even and eyes look brighter. A poorly matched one can make you look tired or washed out. The goal is a palette that helps you shop faster, build outfits that work together, and feel like yourself every day.
The Three Things Analysts Look At
- Undertone: whether your coloring is warm or cool.
- Value: how light or deep your coloring is.
- Chroma: whether your coloring looks soft and muted or clear and bright.
These qualities depend on your undertone and contrast, not on skin color alone, so color analysis works for every skin tone.
The Four Seasons and the 16-Season System
Most people have heard of the four seasons. Each one describes a general direction:
- Spring: warm, bright, and clear, with golden, peachy, and fresh green tones.
- Summer: cool, muted, and soft, with dusty rose, lavender, and powder blue.
- Autumn: warm, muted, and rich, with rust, olive, teal, and burnt orange.
- Winter: cool, bright, and high-contrast, with jewel tones and icy shades.
The 16-season system divides each of the four seasons into four variations. That makes the result more specific, because two people who are both “Summer” can need noticeably different shades. Royal Color uses the 16-season system.
What Happens in a Session
Your analyst holds professionally selected fabric drapes near your face and watches how each color affects your skin, eyes, and hair. You can see the difference in real time, and the analyst explains why some colors lift your complexion while others flatten it.
At Royal Color, an individual session takes approximately 90 minutes. It includes professional fabric draping, your 16-season result, a physical color wallet to take shopping, and personalized hair, makeup, outfit, and accessory guidance.
Why In-Person Beats an App or Online Quiz
Apps and quizzes depend on lighting, camera settings, screen color, and your own description of your coloring. In-person draping uses real fabric next to your face, so you see actual results. If you want a free starting point, try the color season quiz, then compare it with a professional analysis.
How to Prepare
- Wear a neutral top, such as white, gray, or black.
- Come with minimal or no makeup.
- Pull your hair back from your face.
